Steadfastness In Trials {Chelsey & Andy}

James 1:12

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

“Count it all joy my brothers when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” James 1:2

What a difficult thing to find joy in trials. It seems nearly impossible and yet the Bible tells us to count it all as joy! When we have trials in life our faith in God is tested. Yet the word “testing” here denotes a positive test intended to make one’s faith genuine; the result is a life of faithful endurance amid troubles and afflictions (ESV Study Bible). The word steadfast, literally means to have a firm belief. It is a faith we can depend on that is constant and unwavering. Scripture says we are blessed to have trials in this life, for when we remain steadfast in our faith, trust, and hope in Jesus and pass the test we will receive the crown of life. God does not tempt us, He cannot be tempted with evil. God is perfect and Holy, which means that He is complete and lacking nothing therefore He cannot be tempted. A being that lacks nothing is perfectly content and this equates to complete joy. But, we are tempted when we are lured and enticed by our own desires. Humans are never completely content, therefore we seek after our own fleshly desires most often from selfish ambition and pride. This sin (of selfish ambition and pride) always brings forth death that manifests itself in trials and struggles in life.

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others (this is the mindset modeled by Jesus). Philippians 2:3

We must know the word of God to maintain steadfastness. Scripture should shape our thoughts, actions and discernment in every area of our lives. The life of every Christian would be improved if they spent more time in the living Word of God. We are called to meditate (think) on His word day and night.

God is always desiring to draw us into deep, intimate relationship with Him, whether we are in a time of joy or sorrow. Every single time I have been broken down completely, I have always cried out to Jesus as my savior, He is the only one that can truly save me. He listens and hears my cry. Everytime I have been broken down in life I have always overcome those days (even when it didn’t feel like I would), and this has produced a steadfast Spirit in me, because I know that the Lord will be with me and help me conquer all of life’s trials.

Anytime I am in a hardship in life, I have overcome those trials by doing the following: praying about my circumstances; specifically telling God how I feel and asking Him to help me get through feeling so low. Opening up the Bible and reading His word, and actually meditating on it until His Spirit comes upon me and brings me comfort. Worshipping God through music (in song/dance) even when I don’t feel like praising God in the moment. When I focus on the uplifting lyrics and the truth in them, positive change always comes from it. When we are at our lowest, that is when we should lift our praises high to God and He hears our cry for help!
